Here are some lesser-known facts about Martin Luther King Jr.:
Birth nameHis birth name was Michael King Jr., but his father changed it to Martin Luther when he was five years old. The name change was to honor a leader of the German Protestant church.
CollegeKing started college at age 15 after skipping two grades in high school. He enrolled at Morehouse College, the only college in the world at the time that only admitted African-American men.
Nobel Peace PrizeKing won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 at the age of 35, making him the youngest male to ever win the award. He donated all of the money he received for the prize.
GrammyKing won a Grammy in 1970 for Best Spoken Word Album for “Why I Oppose The War In Vietnam”. The album was recorded from a sermon he gave in 1967.
Assassination attemptsKing survived at least one assassination attempt. In 1958, a mentally ill woman stabbed him with a seven-inch blade while he was signing copies of his book Stride Toward Freedom in Harlem.
Other factsKing was a billiards fan, a Trekkie (Start Trek fan), and was arrested more than 25 times. He also wrote five books.
